How I Celebrated
Well, the process is overwhelming for an underwhelming dessert. Maybe if I tweaked it or didn't spend so much time hand whipping the egg whites I would like it a lot better. I did feel accomplished making meringue for the first time. It was also my first time cranking an oven up to 500 degrees. Also, watch out for stupid comments on recipes. I was trying to find balance in not having cream of tartar and also not making the meringue too sweet or flat because of too much vanilla. Some people have some strange expectations for recipes they have never tried before. Anyhow, what we ended up doing was baking a purple cake mix inside a graham cracker crust. Then we molded some ice cream in a bowl and layered it with some of our left over cookie crumbs (from way back to shortbread day). After putting the molded mound of ice cream on top of the cake base, we put it back in the freezer overnight. Made the meringue this morning and popped it in the oven. This glorified ice cream cake was probably too sweet for my liking. I think I am just used to having a more tart frozen yogurt. I could see restaurants making a pretty little dessert with this. Much smaller portions are probably best.
