How I Celebrated

Steak is always delicious. I rarely eat it so when I finally do, it is even more of a treat. Same goes for shrimp. Yesterday Nate and I went to Jinky's Cafe in Studio City. We used our anniversary (well, the night before) as a great occasion to use a groupon we were gifted for Christmas. We had some delicious stuff and got some breakfast steak and grilled shrimp to go, and well even after being heated up the next day, it tasted like heaven!

History

I tried frog legs for the first time in China. They tasted just like chicken, but I have the same problem with them as I do "buffalo" wings. I don't like to have to eat around so much bone! I just want the meat. It is good to know that I can successfully chow down on some frog legs when the zombie apocalypse inevitably comes from everyone trying bath salts. Also, is leap day really known for marriage proposals? I think it is an awesome day to get married because hello, surf and turf?! Yes please.

How I Celebrated

So, never having chocolate souffle before, I would have to say this recipe I made up seems to be like a 3 out of 5 stars. It has some of the characteristics of what other photos look like and describe besides a couple of things. It does have that crisp brownie-like topping. It is light and very chocolate-y. It rose up out of the sides of the pan without sticking, and it tastes really good. Obviously I did not cook it in a ramekin (though, I did see some others that were cooked in large cake pans as well). Also, If I wanted a more moist lava cake texture I probably could have taken it out a bit sooner/ made more chocolate sauce to fold in.
Some of the recipes that I saw did separate their chocolate sauce, but I used an orange funfetti cake mix and I wanted the cake to be uniformly chocolate and at the very least brown instead of orange. So, yeah. I used the Pillsbury orange funfetti mix (a smaller mix than the boxes) that I folded into 6 egg whites that I whipped. Oh, another thing that may have made my texture EVEN better was if I put either lemon juice or cream of tartar in there ( I didn't. I was trying to make this on the fly and whipping those eggs by hand made me impatient already). I melted 1/2cup of unsalted butter on the stove and melted in 2 whole bars of 70% dark chocolate bars. Then I added about 1/3 cup of whole milk. After the cake mix was mixed into the whipped eggs (that seemed to deflate as I mixed in the cake mix, kind of frustrating), Then I mixed in the chocolate sauce. (This is where I should have separated it). I didn't mix it up too much, but I put it in my greased/sugared glass pan. It went into the oven for 40 min. Voila! Delicious.

First try didn't go so well, the wrapper immediately ripped when I tried opening the Starburst. Anyhow. Strawberries are one of the best fruits of all time. Best flavor too. I mean the internet knows that pink starburst are the best.

Punchbowl on strawberries and Kahlua
I think it is funny that ancient Romans used to try to whiten their teeth with strawberries or that they tried to whiten them at all. I feel like that tradition definitely ended somewhere cause even movie stars had some yellow teeth up through the 80s.
I also find it interesting that Kahlua is a cocktail already and they use it to make more cocktails. I guess that is like adding candy bars to ice cream (sounds like an Xzibit meme).

Got a pack of Pistachios from the dollar store. Also, used a pack of pistachio pudding to make some ice cream in the ice cream maker along with coconut almond milk blend. I didn't really read that pudding does not set with almond milk or soy milk, but it didn't really matter because I had more milk than I had pudding mix for so I cooked some over the stove with corn starch and then mixing it all together made it thick enough! Delicious and not too sweet.

How I Celebrated

Hey guys. It has been hectic dealing with some sewage flooding in our apartment the last two days so getting all the shopping done was out of the question. Luckily we had 1 of the three foods on hand. It was very good, Campbell's never gets me down, but I just want to apologize for another boring day (boring because I had so much potential and also because there was already a New England clam chowder day). Stay sanitary!

Diet Helpers

  • Sugar Free

Clam chowder is sugar free, I usually sweeten my chili with honey, so I am sure you could use whatever sweetener you want. The tricky one here is the chocolate covered nuts. You need to get or make some sugar free chocolate. Try these sugar free peanut clusters
  • Gluten Free

Here is that previous clam chowder recipe I posted (when it was NEW ENGLAND clam chowder day). I have never used flour to thicken chili, it has always been the tomato paste for me. Chocolate covered nuts also do not often contain gluten (always check the label).
  • Vegetarian

Veggie chili is not hard to make and I have done it several times. Here is the recipe I posted last time for the clam chowder.Chocolate covered nuts are just fine.

I didn't notice at first that the tortilla chips were flavored, but this was my first time to try Pringles tortilla chips. They were pretty tasty and went well with my salad (helps to get that kale taste out of your mouth).

Diet Helpers

The way that tortilla chips were invented makes way more sense to me now, because who in the right mind would be just making tortilla chips if they were spending time making fresh tortillas in the first place? Fresh tortillas are so good, there are never any leftovers! Of course it would have to be a factory, but also it would have to be a factory that actually cared about waste (so quite a while back).

So I made some sweet potato fries. Actually, the store called them yams but I think grocery stores always mislabel them. I'm not saying I'm right either, or that it doesn't matter, all that I'm saying is I was hungry and pressed for time. Just some potatoes, cut 'em up, put some seasoning (I put seasoned salt and parsley), and some oil. Bake, then add whatever else (I put more salt, and then some cheese). Yummers.

Ok guys. I didn't look up a recipe again. I just grabbed a can of Pilsbury's Grands and tried to roll it out (it was super hard). Then I spread a bunch of butter and cinnamon sugar, and popped them in the oven. They taste fine, don't worry it wasn't a disaster! However, they aren't really sticky, and could have used a ton more cinnamon sugary sweetness on top. Oh well, I put on some Nutella and got my fat kid on!

Diet Helpers

  • Sugar Free

Here are a few recipes I found for cinnamon rolls and biscuits and gravy. They still have added sweetener like honey or coconut sugar, so depending on what you like to use, you will have to substitute accordingly or find another recipe.
  • Gluten Free

See above for recipes. Both sticky buns and biscuits are what you need to find substitutions for. Even the gravy contains flour most of the time.

If you were with me from day one, you know how much I dislike candied cherries. I was not excited about the pie today. Luckily, I didn't have to vomit because there was so much crust, so much sugar, and basically just cherry flavored jelly in the middle so it wasn't a problem *phew*. February 18

How I Celebrated

Well, flounder is not an easy fish to find, and even if I found it, it is more expensive than salmon and I ONLY buy salmon on sale. Not cool. Instead, we opted for opah, a fish I had never tasted before. So we were still trying something new and kind of a new dish. The opah was probably over cooked (although, freshness could have been a factor, I really don't know since I haven't tried it before). I tried to sear it before I put it in the oven and it was cooking way too fast. It is really fiberous, not flaky like salmon or halibut. Also, the stuffing recipe was kind of thrown together because some things sounded good, other things didn't. I don't use mayo anymore etc. After all of that, I think that the problems I had with the stuffing were first of all the quality we got, it was really dry, not your usual easy shred imitation crab. Second, I think I put too many onions. I don't really like onions in the first place, but then only cooking for 5 min in the oven was not enough for the onions to get to my preferred texture and so it ended up tasting like a hot crab salad wrapped in a fish filet. If that is what it is supposed to taste like then sure, whatever. It works. I think I was expecting or wanting a crab DIP taste. So probably pre-cooked with cream cheese or something. Yeah, that would be better.

Diet Helpers

  • Sugar Free

Wine is sugar free, and crab stuffed flounder does not often have added sugar
  • Gluten Free

Wine is gluten free and as long as you do not include any gluten products like saltines or bread crumbs in your stuffing or crust, crab stuffed flounder is pretty easy too. (Well to stay gluten free... good luck finding flounder).
  • Vegetarian

Wine yes, but obviously flounder is a fish and crab is shellfish. Try some fishless filets

Recipes

History

Punchbowl
I know a lot of articles try to exaggerate the benefits of wine, but you have to wonder is it the wine, like after it has been fermented? Or what about if you ferment it further to a vinegar? Everyone talks about the "apple cider vinegar cleanse". Because alcohol is not good for your liver. It reminds me of some other article I read that showed a chart of just how much certain "health foods" also have adverse effects on your body, curing and causing cancer at the same time haha. Not too worried about all that. Just sounds like more excuses to get drunk.

History

Punchbowl probably doesn't have anything because of conflicting dates, I mean my regular go to holiday and observances site only says Indian pudding day, and I did not even have that on my set calendar.
How much does a cafe au lait differ from a latte? they both only say they use hot milk. Does a latte have to be frothed milk? huh.

I was thinking of making candied almonds because I had never made them before. However, there are just too many sweet days and Nate reminded me that it is probably not a good idea. Almond milk is good too, and we found it for ONE DOLLA

History

Punchbowl
So I once heard a girl in highschool telling people that her mom made her eat a handful of almonds every day to make sure she didn't get stretch marks in the future when she had kids. Quite an interesting strategy. I wonder how that worked for her. So if almonds are just the seed of a fruit, is the fruit not edible? I definitely prefer almonds to peanuts in candies, like my favorite m&ms. However, I don't know why they don't make peanut milk like they do in China. That stuff is sooo good. I wonder if I could find some around Chinatown.

How I Celebrated

The only time I usually have gumdrops are when decorating gingerbread houses or the dots from Halloween (well, I guess I don't trick or treat anymore so I don't even have them then). So now I have this big ol' bag of gumdrops that Nate is going to have to eat. I can only stand so many at a time. Plus I tried to make some butterscotch topping. It is really good. I don't know how butterscotch like it tastes, I am distracted by how dark it is. I am used to butterscotch being a lighter yellow color like those disc candies.

How I Celebrated

Today is a great day. I know why they have cream filled chocolates today, but you know I celebrate a different holiday. Shoes day. And second Halloween. So, cream filled chocolates are STILL fitting. Today I had some fake dollar store Lindt truffles. Not the same at all. Way too much sugar, not all the richness that I love. Besides, it is the white chocolate ones I am addicted to. Though expensive, I can still eat a whole bag in one day. Those things are like crack.

Diet Helpers

  • Vegetarian

    You know it

Recipes

  • Obviously you would need a round mold to try and duplicate the shape, but why not try making your own lindor truffles?!
  • How about an instructable on how to make chocolates?

History

I really don't get the hype about the boxes of chocolates for V day. I mean sure, as a young girl, that is all that I could want, except, I am particular about my chocolates. If you really loved me, you would show it by getting some that actually tastes good. Most of those samplers only have one or two good ones, the rest are just ammo to throw at the guy for messing up ;)
Hmm, on another note, reading up on Whitman's, did you know it was sold to Russell Stover and that Russell Stover was acquired by one of my favorites, Lindt. Interesting how large corporations just try to monopolize like that, huh?

How I Celebrated

Tortellini was one of those foods that I pretty much knew what it was before I even had it the first time (this was not the first time). It was pretty expensive and not very easy to find (Nate calculated to be what, around $8/lb? Freaking more than salmon! and pasta is supposed to be cheap...). Well we got it and it was pretty tasty. I like me some cheese filled pasta.

Diet Helpers

  • Sugar Free

Check your store bought tortellini to make sure the fillings to not contain sugar. If you make your own, either make your own pasta, or some people recommend using wonton wrappers for a quick fix.
  • Gluten Free

Either make your own or try someone else's like De Puma's

Personally, cheese tortellini is just fine with me! Again, watch the fillings.

I don't think I have ordered tortellini at a restaurant, but I have had the kind from I think Costco. Pretty tasty. Weird to think there are so many different styles of pasta and they all have different names. I mean just the noodles. Like different cuts of noodles. I don't know that I can think of anything else that is like that.

How I Celebrated

Would I call it celebrating? I probably celebrated more when it was over. It wasn't that bad. I mean, the raisins didn't surprise me at all, but this plum pudding is basically a big steaming pile of raisins. If you like raisins even, its just kind of, ok. Whatever, pass the chocolate.

History

Punchbowl
I think it is interesting that they outlawed something with so many fruits in it for being too rich. I bet that is what killed them all off. The sugar. Well, I don't doubt that the sugar is killing everyone off. Me especially. Also it seems weird that a "Christmas Pudding" isn't the national food on Christmas and some of those other not quite traditional foods be in February. I know some people like to pretend it is Christmas year round. I blame them.

How I Celebrated

Welp internets, it was not a very exciting day. Peppermint patties are not the most fantastic candies, but they make a great refresher after a meal when you don't have any room for a proper dessert. I tried to put some interesting effects in my video, but they are pretty lame. Sorry (not sorry) I didn't go full Elsa (I hate that movie).

February 10

How I Celebrated

I love brownies more than I love cake. I am just not that in to frosting, and I would rather find nuts in there instead of raisins. There is more of an awful surprise in cake, I think. So, this was my first time making the cream cheese brownie. I don't think I had had one before today. I know I have had cream cheese cake, and I probably have seen the marbled brownies thinking they were just marbled with blondie batter. Well. I actually didn't have as much cream cheese as was needed in the recipe, so I tried stretching it with some plain yogurt. It made it a bit more runny, so I tried to put in a bit of flax seed meal to compensate. The bake time was significantly longer, but it looks and tastes alright. It really sticks to the bottom of the pan though.

History

Punchbowl
Wait, a brownie is a "cookie bar"?! Don't you ever say that to me again, punchbowl. A brownie is a sacred dessert between cake and cookie, and you will NOT try to categorize it in a group that it does not belong! I don't know that I have tried a cream cheese brownie, I think I tried cream cheese chocolate cake at my auntie's for Christmas a couple years ago.

Merchandise

Not sure what that one book is about, but it looks like a bunch of little people. I wondered if it was just a Utah girls camp thing. Cause there was a "brownie hike" that we went on where they told us the story of the brownies (sounded like a story of gnomes or some other little folk) who lived in the woods. They would take us at night and we would have to be very quiet and then they took us through their "village" made of hills and sticks and other stuff. Then we went back to camp and sang songs and ate brownies (the best part).
