How I Celebrated

I wanted to dip my own fresh cherries in chocolate, but because they are not in season, that would be way more expensive than just buying some of the regular cherry cordials. I really don't like candied cherries though, so I was not looking forward to it. I had my garbage can and glass of water on hand just in case. If I ever decide to eat chocolate covered cherries in the winter again, I'll be sure to freeze some fresh ones so I don't feel so gross afterwards.

Diet Helpers

  • Sugar Free

It looks like there are plenty of sugar free pre-made options for sugar free chocolate covered cherries on Amazon.com but as always if you want to be sure, you can make some yourself.
  • Gluten Free

Chocolate and cherries themselves do not contain gluten. Just look out for those additives in store bought versions.
  • Vegetarian

    No meat here!

History

Here is a bit from National Day Calendar on the history of chocolate covered cherries:

"In the 1700′s in England, cherries were enclosed in chocolate with a little kirsch (cordial) liqueur. After finding their way to America, they were well accepted with the little bit of alcoholic cordial surrounding the fruit that had been dipped in chocolate.  Although originally made with the liqueur, cordials/chocolate covered cherries are more commonly made with a sugar syrup flavored with cherries.  The pitted cherries that are used have been cooked in sugar syrup and jarred."

Merchandise

Personally, I hate store bought chocolate cherries. Maybe a necklace or something else will do!

Restaurants

I'm someone who is easily pleased when it comes to sugar. If you have more of a refined taste (and that extra stash in your wallet), maybe try looking into a chocolatier. I kinda browsed real quick on the sites and didn't see any chocolate covered cherries in plain sight, but maybe they are a seasonal thing.
