How I Celebrated

I was happy to have another day to eat Rachel sandwiches. The first time I realized that I could like swiss cheese was when I had this particular sandwich at the cafeteria in college. I told Nate about how I liked this sandwich and he didn't know there was a such thing as a Rachel sandwich. Come to find out, it wasn't just a random name that our kitchen staff made up like it does sometimes. Anyhow, today was special because Nate bought some rye bread (we don't usually get that) and we had fresh turkey pastrami and swiss cheese from the grocery deli. Then I cut some cabbage instead of getting the coleslaw bag and of course the spread was thousand island. Happy Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!!

Diet Helpers 

• Sugar Free

  This isn't a particularly sweet food, but watch out for sauces and if you really must, go for sourdough bread.

• Gluten Free

  Besides obviously needing a bread substitute, pastrami sandwiches should be gluten free. Here is a recipe.

• Vegetarian

  Pastrami sandwiches are not vegetarian. Some people have used some tofurky to make some pastrami like sandwich filler. Here is a recipe for a vegetarian Rueben.

History

I had no idea. Wikipedia blows my mind sometimes. So I grew up in SLC, and went to high school right next to Crown Burgers, the place where they invented the pastrami burger. So I guess that is why I never thought it strange when Carl's Jr came out with their pastrami burger. But I have never tried a crown burger pastrami burger because, well, I was pretty damn broke growing up and I think the one burger I ever had at crown burgers was a plain old cheeseburger. Pretty disappointing after everyone raves about their burgers. *sigh* ah money.
